This is a signed Japanese katana bearing the mei “Kanemitsu” (兼光), attributed to Sue-Kanemitsu, a successor of the renowned Bizen Osafune tradition. Active during the early Muromachi period in the 15th century, Sue-Kanemitsu continued the distinguished craftsmanship established by the famous Nanbokuchō master Kanemitsu, preserving the elegant forging techniques and refined aesthetics for which the Osafune school became celebrated.
The blade measures 68.8 cm with a graceful 1.9 cm curvature and has been ō-suriage (greatly shortened), retaining three mekugi-ana that testify to centuries of remounting and continued use. It displays a dignified suguha hamon, whose restrained straight temper line reflects the classical beauty and practical character often associated with late Bizen workmanship.
The sword is mounted in Type 98 guntō koshirae with a leather-covered scabbard, typical of field-service mounts. The remounting of traditionally forged blades into military fittings was common during the wartime period, reflecting continued functional use.
