A well-preserved shōbu-zukuri tantō signed Yamato no Kami Masatsugu, dating to the late Edo period. Measuring 21.0 cm in length, the blade exhibits a practical and robust form with a wide mihaba, substantial kasane, and a graceful shōbu-style profile. The hamon is executed in a gentle gunome pattern, lending the blade both elegance and character.
The accompanying koshirae is particularly noteworthy. Carved from solid wood, the saya is decorated with a magnificent phoenix in high relief, covering nearly the entire surface on both sides. The bold carving and rich three-dimensional detail create an impressive and distinctive appearance, making the mounting a work of art in its own right.
Combining a healthy Bakumatsu-period blade with an exceptional carved phoenix koshirae, this is an attractive and highly displayable example of a Japanese tantō.
