Izumi no Kami Rai Kanemichi was a highly regarded Japanese swordsmith active during the early Edo period (late 16th to 17th century). He belonged to the Kyoto-based Rai lineage, a prestigious tradition originally founded in the Kamakura period and renowned for its refined forging techniques and excellent cutting performance. Kanemichi is particularly known as one of the founders of the Shintō “Kyō-mono” tradition, and his work played an important role in bridging classical Yamashiro aesthetics with the emerging Shintō style. Blades signed Izumi no Kami Rai Kanemichi typically exhibit controlled suguha or suguha-based hamon, fine and dense jihada, and a dignified, balanced overall form.The blade has a nagasa of 54.5 cm. It features a clean suguha (straight) hamon, reflecting the classical Rai-school aesthetic that emphasizes clarity and restraint. Mounted in regulation Imperial Japanese Army Type 98 guntō fittings with a leather-covered scabbard, indicating later military use.
