This blade is signed 赤坂住兼信 Akasaka-jū Kanenobu, a smith working in the Akasaka area, associated with the Mino tradition. Based on its sugata and workmanship, the blade is attributed to the late Muromachi period (16th century).
The blade shows a well-balanced shape with a relatively deep curvature of 1.6 cm, typical of practical battlefield swords of the time. The presence of two mekugi-ana indicates it has been shortened (suriage), a common feature for blades that remained in active use.
The hamon appears as a gentle midare with gunome elements, rather subdued yet elegant, reflecting Sue-Mino characteristics. The jihada shows itame mixed with flowing masame, consistent with Mino-influenced workmanship.
Importantly, the blade remains in its original old polish, meaning it has not been re-polished in modern times despite its age, preserving its historical surface and details as they have naturally aged over centuries. This is highly desirable for collectors who value authenticity and untouched condition.
The sword is mounted in an excellent condition Imperial Japanese Navy officer Kaigunto mounts.
