This sword is signed Kanesada (兼定) and has a blade length of 65.4 cm. Kanesada is a well-known name of the Mino tradition, with multiple generations active from the late Muromachi period onward, particularly famed during the Sengoku era. Smiths of the Kanesada line are celebrated for producing practical, battle-oriented blades with excellent cutting ability, many of which were later reused for military service.
The blade displays a lively midare hamon with strong activity, characteristic of Mino-den workmanship, emphasizing function over ornamentation. The overall shape and hardened edge suggest a sword intended for real use, with a robust and purposeful character rather than a purely ceremonial one.
The sword is mounted in an early Japanese Army Type 94 officer’s guntō koshirae, distinguished by its removable second suspension ring, a feature seen on early-war examples before later simplifications. This pairing of a traditionally forged blade with early military mountings makes the piece especially appealing to both sword collectors and military historians.
