A katana originally forged in the late Muromachi to Azuchi-Momoyama period (16th century). The blade, now ō-suriage with two mekugi-ana, measures 65.6 cm with a curvature of 2.1 cm. Its proportions suggest it was originally made as a longer tachi with deeper curvature, later shortened during the early Edo period for use as a katana.
The koshirae is a rare example of a Japanese Navy Landing Forces officer’s mounting, yet it preserves features usually lost in military adaptations: the kurigata remains intact, and the suspension ring is of the older, non-simplified type. This blend of traditional samurai fittings with later military use reflects the continuity of Japan’s sword culture into the 20th century.
