Kanemitsu (兼光) is a well-known smith name most closely associated with the Bizen tradition, particularly active during the late Kamakura to Nanbokuchō period (14th century). The Kanemitsu lineage is famed for producing robust, service-oriented blades, many of which were later shortened to suit changing combat styles, making ō-suriage examples common.
This blade has a nagasa of 64.4 cm and is in ō-suriage condition. The hamon is a restrained suguha, reflecting a practical and disciplined forging style consistent with later Bizen-influenced work. While the original form has been altered, the remaining proportions and workmanship suggest a blade forged in the Nanbokuchō period, later remounted for military use.
The sword is fitted in a Type 98 Army gunto koshirae with a leather-covered scabbard, a configuration commonly associated with field service during the Second World War.
